Asian readathon 2021

Hi there! May is here!

This month is celebrated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month and Cindy (from withcindy) is hosting the month-long Asian Readathon yet again and of course, I decided to participate. I didn’t get to join last year because I was in a reading slump so this will be my first year and I’m pretty excited :))

The challenge is to read books based on the following prompts:

1. Read any book written by an Asian author.
2. Read any book featuring an Asian protagonist.
3. Read any book written by an Asian author in your favourite genre.
4. Read any nonfiction book written by an Asian author.
5. Read any book written by an Asian author that’s not US-centric.

AND each book read should feature a character or author of a different Asian ethnicity.

See this doc for details on the challenges, recommendations and information on the charities/ giveaways.

Here are the books I plan to read for each prompt:

1. THE STATIONERY SHOP (OF TEHRAN) – MARJAN KAMALI (TURKISH / IRANIAN)

genre: historical romance
pub year: 2019

I previewed this one last year and was liking it so far so I’m happy to finish it for this challenge.

Also, it’s the subtle asian book club pick for May so I’m looking forward to that!

2. THE PERILOUS LIFE OF JADE YEO – ZEN CHO (MALAYSIAN)

genre: historical romance
pub year: 2012

Another historical romance but it wasn’t deliberate, I promise. In fact, I thought this was a fantasy/ thriller from the title. But, this one is an epistolary novella set in 1920s London. It has been sitting in my kindle app for a while + I needed a short book to ease the challenge.

3. PENANCE – KANAE MINATO (TRANS. PHILIP GABRIEL) (JAPANESE)

genre: mystery / thriller
pub year: 2009

I’ve loved mystery books since the beginning of (my) time. I’m probably most excited for this one since I haven’t read this genre in a while.

4. KNOW MY NAME – CHANEL MILLER (CHINESE)

genre: memoir
pub year: 2019

This one has been on my radar for a while. Cindy and Chanelle (from chanelletime) both love and recommend this book so I do hope to get to it.

5. EMPIRE – DEVI YESODHARAN (INDIAN)

genre: historical fiction
pub year: 2017

This is actually a pick for the Reading Women Challenge as a longlist for the JCB Prize (for Indian authors) and I thought well, why not kill two birds with one stone?

I also would like to get to:

THE KISS QUOTIENT – HELEN HOANG (VIETNAMESE)

genre: adult contemporary romance
pub year: 2018

A friend of mine has been trying to get me to read this for the longest while. Hopefully, this is the month I get to read it (and possibly the sequel.)

(This fits prompt #1)

JADE WAR – FONDA LEE (UNKNOWN)

genre: science fantasy
pub year: 2019

I read Jade City (book 1) last year and absolutely loved it. I’m hoping to complete this one in anticipation of book 3: Jade Legacy that will be out later this year.

(This fits prompts #1, #2 and possibly #5)

CRAZY RICH ASIANS – KEVIN KWAN (SINGAPOREAN)

genre: contemporary romance
pub year: 2013

This is mainly on the list because I want to see the film adaptation but would prefer to read the book first (yes, I’m one of those people).

(This fits prompts #1, #2 and somewhat #5)

And that’s it!

Random note: I just realised that the ‘bonus’ books are all from trilogies – which means i might read more than just 3 extra books.

Are you participating in the readathon? What book(s) are you most excited to read?
